IKE'S BOOKS & COLLECTABLES
Winner of South Africa's Best Independent Bookshop
‘One can’t resist a bookshop that makes you want to read the moment you enter it; not later, not when you get home, but right there, right that minute. Ike’s Books and Collectables in Durban is such a place’ (Mail and Guardian). Ike’s is an independent bookshop established in Durban in 1988. Housed in a beautiful old building and opened in its current venue by Nobel Prize winner, JM Coetzee, the bookshop has hosted many authors, whose signatures adorn the walls. We buy and sell out of print and antiquarian books and offer an eclectic range on all subjects. Ike’s is a well-known place to sit, chat and soak up the atmosphere and contrary to popular opinion about booksellers, we do welcome visitors in our solitary space and will even make you a cuppa.
Launch of Living Together, Living Apart? Social Cohesion in a Future South Africa, edited by Christopher Ballantine, Michael Chapman, Kira Erwin and Gerhard Maré
Please join us on Thursday 8 June at 5.30pm when we will be launching Living Together, Living Apart? The book explores the notion of social cohesion in South Africa. The essays, which are short, incisive, at times provocative – tackle issues that are pertinent to both living together and living apart: equality/inequality, public pronouncement, xenophobia, safety, chieftaincy in modernity, gender-based abuse, healing, the law, education, identity, sport, new ‘national’ projects, the role of the arts, South Africa in the world. In focusing on such issues, the essays point towards the making of a future, in which a critical citizenry is key to a healthy society.
Each week we add new books to our shelves, whether it is newly published books or antique volumes sourced from our regular book buying forays. If you are after a particular book do not hesitate to get in touch and we’ll see what we can do for you.
